So you need to measure something? There are some golden rules that you must never break.
Spend more time using the results than measuring.
Know your audience.
Gain top down support and commitment.
Don’t trust data too soon.
Don’t measure or publish in such a way that results can be attributed to individuals.
Build trust with your audience.
Remember that often low precision is more useful than high precision.
Avoid premature precision.
Understand that a measurement without an associated objective is not a measurement.
Understand that a measurement without a benchmark is useless.
Remember that you will get what you ask for (measure), so anticipate unintended consequences (follow needpowerechg on Twitter to be alerted when we publish our Effective Measurement class).
